Resources for Writers

Hey guys! I made this post because I always wish there was one spot I could go to find everything. So I thought, why not make one? As with the saying for books, the same goes for blogs. If there is blog post you want to read but it hasn’t been written, then you must write it. So, let’s get into it!

Book Resources

1. Spilling Ink by Ellen Potter and Anne Mazer. I’ve talked about this before in my post about my favorite books but I’ll mention it again. If you are a beginning writer I would definitely suggest reading this book. It was the book that got me started and I absolutely love its no pressure style. I found it to be easy to read and understand and I felt like the authors understood me.

2. Writing Magic: Creating Stories that Fly by Gail Carson Levine. I mentioned this one before in the same post that I mentioned Spilling Ink. I also read this one when I was first starting out. It’s an instructional book and has a writing exercise to complete at the end of each chapter.

3. The New Baby Name Survey by Bruce Lansky is definitely one of my favorite baby name books. It gives you the name, origin, meaning, image, and famous namesakes for many names both girls and boys.

Website Resources

1. http://www.travelmath.com/flights/ This is a website in which you can find out the time it takes to drive or fly from one place to another and also how far one place is from another and so much more. Just type in the starting point and destination and it will tell you how much time it will take.

2. http://character.namegeneratorfun.com/ This is a website with a bunch of different kinds of name generators. There is a character name generator, elf name generator, dwarf name generator, vampire name generator, fantasy name generator, and many more!

3. http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp This is a website with a test that determines your personality type. Answer the questions from your character’s view and find out what their personality type is!

4. http://clevergirlhelps.tumblr.com/post/65577893505/dumb-ways-to-die This website lists 400+ ways to kill a character.

5. http://www.picmonkey.com/  This is a photo editing website that I use to design covers for my books. I also use it to make collages for my characters. You can use it for free but if you want all the features it has to offer you will have to pay money.

6. http://nanowrimo.org/ This link takes you to the NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) website. I participated in NaNoWriMo for the first time last year and it was amazing. Crazy and stressful but… amazing. NaNoWriMo is an online competition where a bunch of writers from around the world, challenge themselves to write a 50,000 word novel in a month. I managed to write an 80,000 word novel so it was also a crazy productive month. Sadly, this event only happens once a year in November, so get your ideas ready now so you’ll be prepared when this year’s NaNoWriMo rolls around!

7. http://ywp.nanowrimo.org/ This is the link to the NaNoWriMo Young Writer’s program which is geared more to kids ages 17 and under. This program is basically the same as regular NaNoWriMo, but lets the user set their own word count goals.

8. https://campnanowrimo.org/sign_in There is also a program called Camp NaNoWriMo, which takes place in April and July. This is a more easy going version of NaNoWriMo, in which, instead of writing 50,000 words or more in a month, you only have to write 10,000. Of course, you could write more if you wanted to. In this version of NaNoWriMo, you can also work on something other than a novel. I am really looking forward to participating in it this year!

9. http://www.babynames.com/ This link will take you to a baby names website. Perfect for that time when you need to name a new character.
